“Bones of an Unknown Beast” depicts bones found at the top of the Red Butte Research Natural Area when I was performing research for a grant from the Friends of Red Butte Creek. I gathered the bones and placed them on an incline on the trail. I intended to take a photo of the arrangement, but both my cameras died just as I tried to take the picture. I lamented all photos I had taken of turkey feathers and poop up to that point on my long day’s hike (though I will confess that turkey poop can be pretty beautiful). So, I sketched the bone layout in my notebook, intending to return and recreate the image. I tucked the bones in the bushes next to the trail.

I never did return, but I don’t think I needed to. Handling those bones felt as though I was handling my animal fears—fear of animal death; fears associated with being a meat-eater; fears of animals larger than myself. I accepting and moved through these fears. Through painting them I transformed my fears into light.

Watercolor and colored pencil on Arches hot press watercolor paper. The 18”x24” painting is professionally framed with a 22.5”x28.5” hardwood and UV protective glass.
